Establishing a community partnership in the heart of Fetcham
This is a project to develop a new community centre to replace the current Scout Hut at the Cock Lane recreation ground in Fetcham. The project is a partnership between 1st Fetcham Scout Group, St Mary’s Church, Mole Valley District Council and the broader Fetcham community. The project is being led by a not-for-profit community interest company, formed specifically for this purpose.
The current Scout hut was built in 1950 and is well past its best. The building leaks and is prone to flooding. Parking is extremely limited, and the immediate environment has become tired and unwelcoming. The Scouts have been fundraising for several years towards a new building, and The Greenhouse has been designed to meet the Scouts’ requirements for activities and storage. The Scouts will be the first and foremost users of the building. There will, however, be plenty of capacity in the building to accommodate a wide range of other community users.
What will the Greenhouse offer?
A welcoming, accessible and caring environment open to everyone
An attractive, modern and eco-friendly, landmark building designed to be flexible for a range of community uses. A variety of services which will evolve in line with the community’s needs. Activities will include the support of young people, families and older people in leading active, fulfilled lives.
We aim for The Greenhouse’s facilities to be available to any local person who needs them.
What will the building contain?
Light, warm, airy rooms and a relaxed atmosphere throughout
A main hall. This will be used by the Scout Group in the evenings and on some weekends.
The hall is big enough to contain a 10m air rifle range (shooting is something for which 1st Fetcham Scouts are renowned). The hall will also be suitable to house a pre-school during the days and large events at the weekends (up to a maximum of 150 people).
A café. This will contain a snack bar, serving fresh coffee and light meals. It will open out onto a terrace and overlook the recreation ground and a new playground.
A kitchen. This will be fitted out to professional catering standards and will be suitable for catering to groups both large and small.
Extensive storage. Plenty of space for Scouts and other users (including a purpose-built storage shed next to the main hall).
An office. The office for the Greenhouse Manager and Administrator who will be available to welcome visitors during weekdays.
WCs. Fully accessible toilet facilities including a disabled changing places facility. A dedicated WC will serve the main hall to help assure required safeguarding procedures.
Meeting rooms. Various rooms on the lift-accessible first floor, suitable for a variety of formal and informal uses. There will also be a multi-purpose terrace room on the first floor with a great view over the Rec. A kitchenette for preparation of drinks and snacks will be available for users of the first-floor rooms. All first-floor rooms will be lift-accessible.
Parking. The building will be served by a 15-space car park (which is much larger than the current car park) to include disabled parking spaces. There will also be bicycle racks and a pram park. Of course, local people will be encouraged to walk to the building whenever possible!
As well as the Scouts, we expect everyone in Fetcham and the local area to benefit from the building and the community partnerships located there. Subject to availability, the building and its meeting rooms will be available to hire for activities, meetings, parties and events and conditions of hire, which will relate mainly to respecting our neighbours.
We expect that three broad groups will particularly enjoy The Greenhouse: young people, families and older people.
How will it feel to be involved in The Greenhouse?
Our four values are essential for The Greenhouse’s success.
